Yugoslavia: German Chancellor To Visit Kosovo Today

Pristina/Vienna, 23 July 1999 (RFE/RL) - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is due to visit Kosovo today. Schroeder is scheduled to go to the town of Prizren, where German peacekeeping troops are based. Reports said Schroeder plans to meet there with two ethnic Albanians vying for leadership in Kosovo -- Hashim Thaci, the political head of the Kosovo Liberation Army, and moderate politician Ibrahim Rugova. The German leader is also expected to meet with representatives of Kosovo's minority Serbs to discuss their concerns about security in the face of revenge attacks by ethnic Albanians. The NATO commander in Kosovo, British General Sir Michael Jackson, said that despite a 48-hour postponement in the disarmament process of the Kosovo Liberation Army, he was encouraged by the amount of weapons that had been turned in so far. But Jackson said he would not make an official assessment until Saturday on whether the rebel army was in compliance with a demilitarization agreement.
