Russia: Rebel Group Fails To Cross Into Daghestan

Moscow, 19 June 2000 (RFE/RL) - Russian troops today beat back an attempt by a group of Chechen rebels to cross into Daghestan. Russia's military information agency AVN said about 60 rebels attempted to break through but were repulsed by Russian troops. AVN said the rebels suffered casualties but did not give any figures. That attack accompanies more than 20 others by rebels during the last 24 hours. Russia's Emergencies Ministry in Grozny came under fire in the early morning. A Russian soldier was wounded. No other casualties were reported. Other attacks were reported near Kurchaloi, east of Grozny, Shali to the west, and Nozhai-Yurt to the southeast.

A column of federal troops escaped an ambush in Chechnya's southern mountains when a local resident warned the soldiers of the trap. Russian helicopters attacked the rebel group.
