Romania: Post-Communists Win Most Municipal Posts

Bucharest, 21 June 2000 (RFE/RL) - Romania's Central Election Office says the opposition Social Democrats, party of former President Ion Iliescu, won more than one-third of the country's municipal posts after a second round of voting on Sunday. The party of former communists took 1,051 of 2,955 mayoral offices and the center-left Democratic Party won 482 mayorships. In Bucharest, Democratic Party member and Transport Minister Traian Basescu narrowly won the race for mayor against a Social Democrat candidate.

Turnout in both rounds was 47 percent and 51 percent, respectively. Electoral officials must schedule a third round in two races where candidates tied after the second-round ballot.
