Yugoslavia: Kostunica Sees Chance For Resolving Kosovo

Strasbourg, 15 November 2000 (RFE/RL) - Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica said today in Strasbourg that he sees a new chance for solving the Kosovo issue. "I think that there is a new atmosphere, a new possibility actually, for solving that difficult problem of Kosovo Serb and Albanian relations, that was difficult by itself even before Milosevic came to power in Serbia." Speaking to reporters on the fate of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, Kostunica said his government will meet its responsibilities and cooperate with the United Nation's Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia.

"I think that one institution, something that has been created by man at a particular moment, the Hague tribunal, is of course not enough to get the whole picture of the truth. But anything that may bring us closer to the truth is something that one should support, and in that way we are looking toward cooperation with the Hague tribunal and the opening of the office in Belgrade."

Earlier, Kostunica said in an address to the European Parliament that his government's long term goal is to join the European Union.
