Chechnya: Rebels Continue Raids On Russian Troops

NAZRAN, Russia, 20 January 2001 (RFE/RL) -- An official in Chechnya's Kremlin-backed administration says Chechen separatist guerillas have killed five Russian soldiers and wounded eight others in the past day. The Associated Press quotes the official as saying the rebels attacked Russian positions and checkpoints 19 times and initiated intensive clashes in the capital Grozny, Argun in southern Chechnya, and the outskirts of Gudermes, Chechnya's second largest city.

Chechen separatist spokesman Movladi Udugov said a group of rebels attacked a police station in Argun on Friday, killing at least nine policemen. There was no independent confirmation of the attack reported by Udugov.

Vladimir Kalamanov, the Russian presidential human rights envoy to Chechnya, was scheduled to fly to Strasbourg, France, for upcoming hearings on Chechnya by the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly.
