Yugoslavia: Del Ponte Seeks Trial Of War Criminals

Belgrade, 23 January 2001 (RFE/RL) -- The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia, Carla Del Ponte, arrives in Belgrade later today for an unprecedented three-day visit. Del Ponte is expected to meet Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica on her first day in the Yugoslav capital. Kostunica recently agreed to see her after first saying he was too busy. Del Ponte is expected to demand full cooperation from the government, including the arrest and extradition of former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic and other suspects it has indicted. Milosevic is wanted for alleged involvement in atrocities his troops committed against Kosovo Albanians in 1999. Kostunica has made clear he does not want to extradite Milosevic to The Hague, but has suggested trying him in Yugoslavia.
