Moscow, 30 March 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Support for Russian membership in the World Trade Organization will top the agenda at a conference being organized by the European Union today in Moscow. At an EU summit last week in Stockholm, Western European leaders urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to implement economic reforms to attract foreign investors and expedite World Trade Organization membership.
The EU says some 100 Russian legislators, government officials, and business elites have been invited to the conference to discuss the "benefits" of WTO membership. Also expected to attend are WTO Director-General Mike Moore, EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy, and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov.
