Tajikistan: Deputy Interior Minister Assassinated

Dushanbe, 11 April 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Reports from Tajikistan say Deputy Interior Minister Habib Sanguinov was assassinated early today. Tajik officials say the assassination was linked to the minister's anti-crime work. Interior Minister Khumdin Sharipov said the deputy interior minister's murder was likely connected to his job, in which he was in charge of several operations "to track down and eliminate criminal bands."

Police say Sanginov's car was ambushed by three unidentified gunmen in a residential suburb of Dushanbe. His driver and two bodyguards were also killed in the attack.

Sanginov was appointed to his post in 1999.
