Yugoslavia: Milosevic Faces New Charges

The Hague, 29 October 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic appeared before the United Nations war crimes tribunal at The Hague today to face new charges. Milosevic will be asked to enter a plea to charges that he ordered the persecution of Croats and other non-Serb civilians during the Croatian war in the early 1990s, when Milosevic was Serbian president. The Croatian indictment was approved by the war crimes court earlier in October.

Reports say prosecutors are also planning to present to the court amendments to Milosevic's indictment for war crimes in Kosovo.

Milosevic has refused to acknowledge the authority of the UN Tribunal.
