Kosovo: Ethnic Albanian Politician Shot Dead

Pristina, 18 January 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Unidentified attackers have shot and killed an ethnic Albanian lawmaker in Kosovo. United Nations officials said Smajl Hajdaraj, a deputy in the recently elected Kosovo parliament, was shot several times last night in front of his house in Pec in western Kosovo.

The attackers fled and no arrests have been made. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Hajdaraj, a former ethnic Albanian guerrilla fighter, was a member of Ibrahim Rugova's Democratic League of Kosovo party, which holds 47 seats in the 120-seat Kosovo assembly. Rugova has been seeking -- but has failed so far -- to win election in the assembly as Kosovo's president.
