Afghanistan: U.K. Peacekeepers Sent Home In Wake Of Shooting

Kabul, 19 February 2002 (RFE/RL) -- A spokesman for British peacekeepers in Afghanistan said today that two soldiers accused of killing a civilian have been sent home. Captain Graham Dunlop said it was normal procedure to send the men home during the inquiry. He said any punishment would be carried out in Britain.

Early on the morning of 16 February, the two men shot at a car violating the city's nighttime curfew. The soldiers say they were fired upon first by an unknown attacker.

Afghan police say the soldiers fired 60 bullets at Hamayon Yaqobi's car as he was rushing his pregnant sister-in-law to the hospital.

Yaqobi died instantly of a gunshot to the head. The pregnant woman was injured and gave birth in a nearby house.
