Ukraine: Voters Committee Finds Numerous Violations

Kyiv, 28 March 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's independent Voters Committee today reported numerous violations in the campaign for the 31 March parliamentary elections. The committee surveyed 930 cities and towns and 640 party offices. It said one-third of the more than 30,000 polling stations in the country are not properly equipped or staffed.

The committee reported violations such as providing false information so as to blacken competitors' names, students being forced to campaign, and physical attacks on campaigners.

About 20 members of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) are due to arrive in Ukraine today to observe the elections. They will be among nearly 1,000 observers of Sunday's elections.
