Ukraine: President Promises Cooperation With Next Parliament

Kyiv, 29 March 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma said two days before national elections that he is determined to "cooperate constructively" with the next parliament. Kuchma today said in an interview with the daily "Fakty" that he hopes the new parliament will be able to create a "reform-oriented majority" and that the opposition will act in "a legal and civilized way."

Kuchma has frequently been at odds with the outgoing legislature, dominated by his Communist and nationalist opponents.

Kuchma said he is confident that the parliamentary poll on Sunday will be fair, with effective methods of counting votes in the presence of thousands of foreign and domestic observers.
