Ukraine: NATO Leaders Discuss Partnership With Kyiv

Kyiv, 9 July 2002 (RFE/RL) -- NATO Secretary-General Lord George Robertson reviewed Ukraine's contributions to regional security and peace in meetings with Ukrainian leaders today in Kyiv. Robertson and the 19 representatives to NATO's governing political body, the North Atlantic Council, are in Ukraine to mark the five-year anniversary of the start of Ukraine's official partnership with NATO.

President Leonid Kuchma and Foreign Minister Anatoliy Zlenko pressed Robertson and North Atlantic Council members to support Ukraine's bid to enter NATO.

Ukraine declared its intention to seek membership in NATO in May, after maintaining an official policy of neutrality for years. Ukraine has been a member of NATO's Partnership for Peace program since 1997.
