Russia: Ivanov -- Moscow To Pursue Ties With East And West

Moscow, 14 July 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said today that Russia's pro-Western policies do not mean the Kremlin is turning its back on the East. Ivanov told RTR television that Moscow will develop its relations everywhere that is in its interests. He said that Russia has relations with China and India, and "those are neither smaller nor worse than our relations with the West, the European Union and the United States."

Russian President Vladimir Putin told a meeting of Russian diplomats on Friday that the new U.S.-Russian relations are based, in part, on a similar view of the threats facing the world.
