Ukraine: Kuchma Calls For Amendments Giving Parliament More Power

Kyiv, 28 August 2002 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma today asked a group of cabinet ministers and lawmakers to prepare constitutional amendments that would give parliament more power. The move follows a speech Kuchma made last week in which he proposed shifting Ukraine's political balance to allow parliament, rather than the president, to direct the agenda.

Kuchma is facing increasing pressure from opposition parties who call for his resignation. Several leading parties are planning to hold street protests in the capital Kyiv next month to call on Kuchma to step down.
