Ukraine: Pro-Kuchma Parties Join Opposition

Kyiv, 18 September 2002 (RFE/RL) -- A Ukrainian opposition bloc has said that four parliamentary factions loyal to President Leonid Kuchma have agreed to join the bloc in an effort to form an opposition coalition in parliament. A spokeswoman for former Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko's opposition Our Ukraine bloc made the announcement today. Irina Gerashchenko said the four centrist groups are Working Ukraine, Agricultural Ukraine, Democratic Initiatives, and the Popular Democratic Party.

She said that with their support, the opposition will have 202 of parliament's 450 seats.

Gerashchenko also said talks are ongoing with two other centrist groups, Ukrainian Regions and People's Power, to join the opposition.
