EU: Irish Vote Of 'Yes' On Nice Treaty Is Official

Dublin, 20 October 2002 (RFE/RL) -- The final, official count in Ireland's second vote on a European Union enlargement treaty is in, and the figures show that 63 percent voted to approve the treaty. Turnout at today's second vote on the issue was given at 48.45 percent compared to the 35 percent turnout in Ireland's first referendum on the Nice Treaty last year when the issue was voted down.

State television reported that 906,318 people voted in favor of enlargement while 534,887 people voted against it.

The vote removes the last obstacle to the EU admitting new members, most of which come from formerly communist Eastern Europe.
