Russia/Ukraine: Foreign Ministers Adopt Strategic Partnership Declaration

Kyiv, 20 May 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The foreign ministers from Russia and Ukraine say they have adopted a declaration on a strategic partnership. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Anatoly Zlenko said late yesterday after talks in Kyiv with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov that the document confirms the two countries' interest in improving "cooperation in the political and economic fields."

He gave no details, but said the declaration must be formally approved by both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma before it will be legally valid.

Ivanov said he and Zlenko had also worked out the final details of the demarcation of the border between Russia and Ukraine, which had been agreed upon in January by Putin and Kuchma.

Ivanov is expected to meet with Kuchma before flying to Sweden today.
