Azerbaijan: Editor And Reporter Sentenced To Jail Terms

Baku, 21 May 2003 (RFE/RL) -- An Azerbaijani court has sentenced an editor and reporter from an opposition newspaper to five months in jail after finding them guilty of insulting President Heidar Aliev's brother and spreading false information. The paper "Muxalifet" (Opposition) says the court ruled yesterday in favor of Djalal Aliev, the president's brother and a lawmaker in the Azerbaijani parliament, who had filed the suit.

The article said the country's agricultural industry was dominated by a small group that was harming the sector. It featured a prominent photograph of Djalal Aliev.

The journalists are expected to appeal.
