Chechnya: Ten Russian Servicemen Reported Killed

Vladikavkaz, Russia; 2 June 2003 (RFE/RL) -- In the latest fighting in Chechnya, rebel attacks have killed 10 Russian servicemen, and the Russian military has struck at rebel positions with artillery and aerial bombing. An official in the Moscow-backed Chechen administration said today three of the soldiers were killed when a military jeep was attacked yesterday and six others died in a series of 23 rebel attacks on Russian military outposts. One soldier and four rebels died in another clash, the official said.

The report follows a pattern familiar for most of the conflict in which Chechen rebels kill Russian soldiers almost daily in small attacks. The Russian forces have not been able to dislodge rebels in the mountains or eliminate those who have infiltrated into cities.
