Astana, 3 June 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao (pictured, right) and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev signed agreements today to revitalize work on an oil pipeline from western Kazakhstan to China as well as boost Chinese participation in the Kazakh energy sector. Hu said at a news conference with Nazarbaev after their talks in the Kazakh capital Astana that China places great attention and importance on developing friendly relations between the two countries.

The two leaders also pledged to more than double trade between their countries over the next two years to $5 billion, up from just under $2 billion last year.

They also pledged today to fight any extremism, separatism, and terrorism that they said might threaten the region.
