Tajikistan: Big Drug Bust in Dushanbe

Prague, 9 June 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Tajik police have seized 188 kilograms of heroin in the capital Dushanbe. Tajik Interior Minister Makhmadsaid Dzhurakulov said four couriers were detained following a weekend operation. He said most of the shipments originate in neighboring Afghanistan.

Meanwhile in England, British customs officers and police have seized over $60 million worth of heroin and cocaine and arrested 14 people in two operations conducted over several weeks.

Officers seized nearly 400 kilograms of heroin with a street value of $50 million several days ago in the first operation. In the second, officers seized 120 kilograms of cocaine worth $13.28 million.

The Tajik and British operations were unconnected.
