Iraq: Bremer Says Iran Must Pull Back Border Posts

Washington, 20 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, today insisted that Iran should withdraw its border posts from Iraqi territory, even though he described the alleged intrusions as "pretty minor." Bremer says Iran moved seven border posts between 1.5 kilometers and 3 kilometers into southern Iraq. He said the infractions were "not a very hospitable part of Iraq to annex." But he said Iran should nonethless pull the posts back to their original positions.

Iran has strongly denied that it has moved any border posts. Bremer made the remarks in Washington, where he arrived for a week-long visit today.
