Iraq: One U.S. Marine Killed, One Wounded In Attack


Baghdad, 27 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- One U.S. Marine was killed and another wounded in a grenade attack in Iraq today, bringing to five the number of U.S. soldiers killed in the last 24 hours. A U.S. military spokesman said the attack happened in the early hours of today, and involved soldiers from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. The spokesman had no details on the location of the attack.

Forty-nine U.S. soldiers have now died at enemy hands since U.S. President George W. Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq on 1 May.

Ten have died since U.S. forces killed Saddam Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay on 22 July.
