Ukraine: Thousands Protest Russian Dam

Lviv, Ukraine; 20 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Thousands of Ukrainians protested yesterday against construction of a Russian dam that Kyiv claims threatens Ukraine's sovereignty. The Associated Press reported that some 5,000 people gathered to protest Russia's construction of a dam in the Azov Sea channel between Ukraine's Crimea and southern Russia.

Ukraine claims Moscow failed to get its consent before starting to build the dam and that the dam will make it more difficult to delineate the countries' common border.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Leonid Kuchma signed a treaty in January delineating the border, but AP says the status of the Azov Sea remains uncertain.
