Iraq: Red Cross Says Shuts Baghdad, Al-Basrah Offices

Geneva, 8 November 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today announced it has decided to temporarily shut its offices in Baghdad and Iraq's southern city of Al-Basrah given concerns about its staff's safety. ICRC spokesman Florian Westphal said the decision was made because the situation in Iraq is "extremely dangerous and volatile."

The decision follows last month's car-bomb attack on the ICRC building in Baghdad. The blast killed 12 people, including two ICRC guards.
