Shaimiev To Attend Regional Leaders Conference
Tatarstan's president, Mintimer Shaimiev, is planning to meet Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Saransk, Mordovia on 2 December. Putin reportedly intends to hold a conference on economic development issues with Russian regional leaders in Saransk.

Tatarstan Gains Refinery In Ukraine
Tatarstan's deputy prime minister, Ravil Muratov, said on 1 December that Ukraine has paid off a significant part of its debt to the Republic of Tatarstan (TR). He said that the remaining $19.8 million debt would be converted into property in the form of the Kremenchug oil refinery in Ukraine. The refinery processes high-grade sulphur oil imported from Tatarstan for the Ukrainian market. Muratov emphasized that the Ukrainian market was "of great importance for TR."

Pipeline Explosion Near Tatarstan's Border
Tatarstan's Ministry of Emergencies reported that there was an explosion at the Pomari-Uzhgorod gas pipeline branch in neighboring Kirov oblast, close to the republic's border, on 1 December. The ministry and Gazprom specialists are working at the site and hope to stop the fire and reconnect the line within the next 2-3 days. The Kukmor and Mamadish regions of Tatarstan are being supplied with emergency reserves of natural gas in the meantime.
