RFE/RL’s Ahto Lobjakas has been named as one of six finalists for the 2009 “Reporting Europe” Prize. The annual award, sponsored by the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) in partnership with Thomson Reuters, recognizes individual journalists for specific stories casting light on European issues.

In his nominated piece, “Karadzic in The Hague: A Victory for EU Values,” Lobjakas documents the delicate balance Brussels has attempted to strike in the post-war Balkan states of southwestern Europe. He describes the arrest of Radovan Karadzic, one of Slobodan Milosevic’s chief political allies, as “an important vindication for the EU,” adding, “It shows that reconciliation, not just force, can bring justice.”

The winner will selected by a distinguished jury during an award ceremony to be held April 7, in London. More information on the award can be found on the UACES website.
