YEKATERINBURG, Russia -- Aleksandr Misharin is expected to gain official approval next week after being selected by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to replace longtime Sverdlovsk Oblast Governor Eduard Rossel, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Misharin was selected for the post by Medvedev on November 10 and is expected to be confirmed on November 17.

Sverdlov Oblast Duma chairman Nikolai Voronin told RFE/RL that Medvedev's recommendation of Misharin would be discussed in the Duma next week.

Outgoing governor Rossel, 62, is expected to leave the governor's post on November 21. He has been governor of the oblast since 1991 and is considered one of Russia's most-powerful regional politicians.

Misharin is a member of the ruling United Russia's General Council, which has more than 100 members.
