(Kabul, Afghanistan) RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan has won the “Appreciation Award for Supporting Sports in Afghanistan” by the Afghan Paralympic Committee for its coverage of the nation's paralympic athletes.

Radio Free Afghanistan received one of four medals from the committee and was the only media organization to be honored with such an award.

“Under Taliban rule, an organization like the Paralympic Committee did not exist,” says Akbar Ayazi, Director of Radio Free Afghanistan. “This makes the achievements of all of Afghanistan’s international athletes more significant. We are honored to have the opportunity to report on these national heroes.”
