Belarusian Activists Detained On Solidarity Day

Updated

Two members of Belarus's unregistered Youth Front organization were detained by police in Minsk today, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Police detained the group's leader, Artur Finkevich, and another activist, Syarhey Kastylenka, right after a gathering to mark Solidarity Day in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.

The day has been honored in many Belarusian towns and cities on the 16th of every month since October 16, 2005.

The activists use the day to express solidarity with relatives of disappeared Belarusian politicians and activists, whose whereabouts and fates remain unknown.

The 16th represents September 16, 1999, when opposition leader Viktar Hanchar and former businessman Anatol Krasouski "disappeared" after visiting a sauna in Minsk.

They and several others have never been found.
