Deputy Mayor Of Crimean City Arrested

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine -- Officials from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's office in Crimea has said that the deputy mayor of the Crimean capital, Simferopol, has been detained, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

Marina Chernova was placed in the preliminary detention center after being arrested.

Officials say her detention is part of an investigation into alleged criminal violations by the Simferopol city council, which the deputy mayor is a member of.

In August, police searched the Simferopol mayor's office, the Land Resources and Architecture committees. No charges have been announced.
