Finance Minister Aleksei Kudrin has become the latest high-profile tourist to visit the bottom of Russia's Lake Baikal.

Putin did it last year.

And Mongolia's president did it last month (report with video)

The exploratory dives come against a backdrop of trouble for beleaguered Baikal. The UN is considering scratching this unique ecosystem off its World Heritage list because of waste from a contentious pulp and paper mill.

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
