Police in the capital of the Slovak Republic, Bratislava, say a gunman killed six people and injured at least nine others before turning a weapon on himself and committing suicide.

The violence took place at an apartment building in the Devinska Nova Ves neighborhood on the outskirts of Bratislava. Police say the gunman was armed with a machine gun and two pistols when he went on the shooting rampage.

Authorities say four women and a man were shot dead inside the apartment building, while another man was shot and killed outdoors.

Slovak police commander Jaroslav Spisiak said the gunman was about 50 years old. Authorities would not immediately confirm further details about the gunman's identity.
