Police say hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes in eastern Serbia because of flooding.

Swollen rivers have flooded more than 300 homes and a prison in Zajecar, near the border with Bulgaria.

They say several dozen inmates have also been evacuated.

Serbia's traffic authorities say several roads in eastern and southeastern parts of the country have been flooded, disrupting traffic.

Officials say the floods have been caused by melting snow and heavy rains.
