U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, and Co-Chairman Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, (D-FL) issued statements on December 15 decrying the murders of journalists in Russia. Referring to the recent murder of Magomed Yevloyev, Cardin called the 2-year sentence received by his killer "shameful." Hastings also delivered a strong message about impunity, saying, “If Moscow is serious about being a responsible member of the civilized international community it needs to get serious about protecting the rights of all it citizens, especially those most at risk."
