Kazakh Father Dies After Immolation Over Son's Arrest

ATYRAU -- A 52-year old man who set himself on fire in front of a Kazakh prosecutor's office to protest his son's arrest in connection with a murder has died as a result of his injuries, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reported.

Kabidolla Sholaqov suffered burns over more than 90 percent of his body when he self-immolated in front of the West Kazakhstan Oblast Prosecutor's Office in the city of Atyrau on May 26.

Relatives alleged that an investigator had demanded a $15,000 bribe from Sholaqov in exchange for his 18-year-old son's release. Sholaqov tried desperately but failed to come up with the sum to "save" his son, they added.

In the end, Sholaqov's widow Nasikhat said, her husband set himself on fire to protest such lawlessness.
