Staying 'Aliev'

Rakhat Aliev continues to dish the dirt on Kazakh President Nazarbaev, and sundry misfortunes continue to befall his friends.

So it's little wonder that the rector of Kazakhstan's National Art Academy has changed his name. The educator formerly known as Arystanbek Aliev says he is tired of fielding questions about whether or not he's related to the exiled former presidential son-in-law and current thorn in the side of the Nazarbaev administration.

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
