Comrade Duch, the former head of the Khmer Rouge's notorious torture and execution prison, was sentenced on July 26 to 35 years in jail at the UN-backed war crimes tribunal.

Kaing Guek Eav, also known as Duch, headed Toul Sleng, a top secret detention center for the worst "enemies" of the state.

More than 16,000 people passed through its gates before they were killed.
