Residents Flee Heavy Floods In Southern Kazakhstan

SARYAGASH, Kazakhstan -- Floodwater forced more than 260 people to evacuate the Saryagash district in South Kazakhstan Oblast today, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

South Kazakhstan's Emergency Situations Department spokesman Arman Sibekov told RFE/RL that heavy rains that began on May 27 in the area caused the floods.

Asibekov said 54 apartment blocks and houses in the town of Saryagash and six local villages were affected by the high water.

This is the third major period of flooding in Kazakhstan in the last three months.
