MOSCOW (Reuters) -- Russian riot police detained up to 30 protesters as they attempted to stage a protest calling for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to resign.

As protesters unfurled banners calling for Putin to quit office, Russian riot police moved in and made the arrests.

There was a large police presence at Moscow's central Triumfalnaya Square where the group "Russia without Putin" had attempted to gather for the unsanctioned protest, a Reuters reporter said.

Other protesters were held as they arrived from a nearby metro station to attend the meeting.
