Russian Mayor Resigns After Son Charged With Embezzlement


NOVOKUZNETSK, Russia -- The mayor of the eastern Russian city of Novokuznetsk resigned today as an investigation into his son's alleged financial transgressions continues, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The Novokuznetsk City Council accepted Sergei Martin's decision to step down at its session today.

The Kemerovo Oblast administration press service told journalists that the mayor's son, Maksim Martin, has been charged with embezzling 90 million rubles (over $3 million) that was allocated for repairs to apartment buildings.

Police have opened six criminal cases against Maksim Martin's company.

Novokuznetsk, a city of some 550,000 people, is in Kemerovo Oblast.
