Russian Medical Officials Jailed For Taking Bribes

STAVROPOL, Russia -- Four Russian medical workers have been jailed for taking bribes for issuing false disability certificates, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Three doctors at the Medical and Social Expertise Center in the southwestern city of Stavropol -- Irina Romanova, Tamara Petrosian, and Anna Lubenets -- were each given jail terms of between seven and eight years. Nurse Sabira Fahretdinova was sentenced to four years in prison.

They were found to have given healthy people documents declaring them to be physically disabled in exchange for money.

The center's acting director, Valentina Barakhovich, was found guilty of organizing a criminal group and taking more than 60 bribes. The court ruled she be admitted to a psychiatric clinic for treatment.
