Russian Police In Ulyanovsk Detain Five Activists

MOSCOW -- Police in the Russian city of Ulyanovsk detained five members of an opposition group on January 29.

The activists of the Russian People's Democratic Union, led by former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, were holding a gathering when police detained them.

Yelena Dikun, an adviser to Kasyanov, told RFE/RL's Russian Service that the protesters were distributing pamphlets explaining the ongoing economic crisis in Russia.

She said the gathering was sanctioned by city authorities.
