Russian Policemen Charged Over 'Beating'

Two policemen in Russia's southwestern Samara Oblast have been officially charged in the alleged beating of a man in their custody, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Prosecutors in Novokuibyshevsk accused the two policemen, Aleksandr Eskov and Andrei Katkov, of brutally beating a man in the town of Chapayevsk on May 7, 2009.

The police detained the man, Sergei Tselykh, and allegedly began beating him at the police station in order to get him to confess to buying illegal drugs.

Officials from the Samara Oblast Prosecutor-General's Office told RFE/RL that Tselykh had to spend several weeks in the hospital after the beating.
