Tajik President Named National Olympic Committee Chief

DUSHANBE -- Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has been elected the chief of Tajikistan's National Olympic Committee (NOC), RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

Rahmon was the only candidate remaining for the post after three other candidates asked to have their names removed from consideration at the last moment.

NOC representatives told RFE/RL that it is normal for the country's leader to be the head of the Olympic committee, citing Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Turkmenistan as examples.

They said Rahmon being named the NOC chief will help promote sports in Tajikistan.
