Though cultural ties between Tatarstan and Turkey have strengthened during the last decade, this festival is the first in the history of bilateral cultural relations.
Tatars share the same linguistic and cultural background as Turks, and Tatar intellectuals have long been inspired by Turkish culture.
After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ankara established a Consulate-General in Kazan, Tatarstan's capital.
