Ukrainian Independence Leader's Death Under Scrutiny


KYIV -- Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) is investigating the circumstances of the death of military leader Roman Shukhevich, RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service reports.

Shukhevich, commander in chief of the Ukrainian Liberation Army from 1942-1950, was killed and secretly buried by the Soviets as he led his country’s fight for independence.

SBU spokesperson Valentin Nalivaychenko said during a press conference that information about Shukhevich’s last military operation is being collected.

His grave's location is still unknown.

In 2007, President Viktor Yushchenko posthumously awarded Shukhevich with the title "Hero of Ukraine.”
