Uzbeks Release Injured Kyrgyz Border Guard


BISHKEK -- A Kyrgyz border guard who was wounded and captured by Uzbek border guards last week has been released and taken to a hospital in Kyrgyzstan, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Sergeant Nurbek Orunkulov was reportedly wounded during a shootout between Kyrgyz and Uzbek border guards near the village of Chek on January 17.

Uzbek border guards had kept him in captivity for one week.

Kadyrbek Bechelov, the chief of the Security and Defense Department in Kyrgyzstan's Jalalabad region, told RFE/RL that Orunkulov is in stable condition in an Osh hospital.
